Book Club . . . a wonderful 35th Anniversary Activity

Dear Leaders-

A great chapter activity for the 35th Anniversary is to host a book club session with your membership and that is our recommended event for Chapters in November. Many chapters, like the Kentuckiana Chapter (shown below) have had successful discussions and social events built on a book that delves a little deeper into the experiences of others with hearing loss have had brought to life by a talented and insightful writer. Our list of suggested books is below. Confucius said “You cannot open a book without learning something” and Groucho Marx added “Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend.” Why not plan ahead right now by selecting a book from the list below to create a fun session around it? Happy reading, Ed

Help HLAA get Top-Rated for 2015

Dear Chapter Leader,

GreatNonprofits – a review site like TripAdvisor – assigns highly reviewed nonprofits to their 2015 Top-Rated List. HLAA was a Top-Rated Nonprofit in 2014. You can help us be top-rated for 2015 as well.

Please help us maintain this high visibility rating for our work by posting a review of your experience with HLAA. All reviews will be visible to potential donors and volunteers. It’s easy and only takes a few minutes! Click here or go to: http://greatnonprofits.org/reviews/write/hearing-loss-association-of-america-1  to complete a 50 word or less review.

We have until September 15 to collect 10 new, high rated (4 or 5 star) reviews. The most useful reviews are candid and personal. Points you may wish to consider in your review:
1.     How long have you been associated with HLAA?
2.     What is most important to you in HLAA’s work?
3.     Has HLAA provided assistance or resources that are especially important or meaningful for you?
4.     Are the many community aspects important to you? (e.g., membership, chapter activities, convention)
5.     Do you have a special memory of HLAA’s work to share?

Benefits to HLAA for a Top-Rated designation include:
·       A Badge, Certificate, Press Kit, and Marketing materials to include in donor letters and on the website
·       Promotion throughout the year and during the fundraising season in conjunction with #GivingTuesday
·       Promotion via social media, public relations, and on thought leader publications via the Huffington Post and other mediums
·       Mention from sponsors and partners, and special designation on the GreatNonprofits site

Thanks for taking the time to submit a review and encouraging your members to do the same.

Loretto

All Chapters: Please Tell Us That You Filed

For various reasons, leadership changes, etc., you often ask about your IRS status or about your EIN.

If all chapters could send us something from the IRS that looks like the paper below, we could help you keep track and know that you are in compliance. Also, on the chapter update form we now ask for your EIN. The IRS continues to scrutinize nonprofit organizations and our files have to be as up to date as yours. Please send us updates to Ed Ogiba by October 1, 2015.

Here is a sample of the confirmation from the IRS when a chapter has filed their 990-N. Please forward the email to Ed Ogiba once you have received it from the IRS.  We would appreciate you sending your 2014 filing to us even if you have already filed. Thank you for your cooperation.
