HLAA Online Store Now Open- Did Your Chapter's Leader Receive Access?

Order Materials in Our New HLAA Online Store
We are pleased to announce the opening of our new HLAA Online Store hosted by Ironmark. This is the place for one-stop shopping for all your HLAA activities - you can order brochures, copies of Hearing Loss Magazine, DVDs, pens with the HLAA logo, displays and banners with your chapter logo, and more.
The current contact person for each Chapter has been sent a login (email and generic password) for the store and should have received that information in an email from Ironmark (dated September 24, 2014). If you are the Chapter’s primary contact and did not receive login instructions, please email Gaelin Bryant who will update HLAA’s database and relay your information to Ironmark. If your Chapter has new leaders, please email Gaelin so we can update our database and website – we can’t emphasize how important this is (see below)!

When you login for the first time you will be prompted to enter a security question and change your password to something you prefer. The primary contact will have full access to the site and all of the materials, including promotional items. You may still order HLAA materials if you are not a primary Chapter contact – just click on the link that reads "If you are not affiliated with a chapter, register here." Don’t be confused by the wording here – we receive orders from professionals and other people who are necessarily involved with a chapter but who like to have our materials on-hand.
To begin shopping, click on HLAA Online Store or go to
Should you have login or technical questions about the HLAA Online Store, email or call 410.329.1224.

Updating Your Chapter Contact Information
Many chapters have incomplete or outdated information on the HLAA website, which could be preventing many new first-time visitors from contacting your chapter.  Make sure we have your current information so people with hearing loss who are looking for support find the correct information on the Find a HLAA Chapter page. For convenience, just copy and paste the information below into an email and send to Ed Ogiba at and copy Gaelin Bryant at
Here is the Information We Need:
Chapter Name
When Chapter Meets (Day of Month/Time/What Months)
Where Chapter Meets (Venue Name/Full street address/city/state/zip)
Primary Contact
Contact #2: (Optional, but the chapter needs a least one phone and one email contact)

Have State or Chapter News to Share?

The HLAA State and Chapter News section in each issue of Hearing Loss Magazine is always looking for newsworthy chapter/state organization events and achievements to feature. We like to showcase:
Hearing Loss Magazine front cover
• any new program or event that helped to build significant incremental awareness, attendance or membership

• awards or special honors bestowed on state or chapter members.

• new educational, support or advocacy events for the membership or the community.

• outreach efforts that educate people on new technologies, like assistive listening devices, or introduce members to access in the community such as captioning, loop systems or CART at the movie houses, theaters or other  public venues.

If you have a short news summary as well as a photo to share, send it to me by email by this Friday, September 19 for it to be considered for the November/December issue. Any submissions sent after Friday will be considered for the January/February issue as space permits.

Ed Ogiba
Director of Chapter Development

P.S. Are you getting the most out of Hearing Loss Magazine? The magazine has extremely valuable content and the articles all have a very long shelf life, so it is the ideal tool to attract people to your chapter. Several chapters leaders tell me that once they have read the magazine, they leave their copy in the office of their audiologist, regular doctor or another high traffic community venue. Better still, they add a sticker to the front cover (see below) to let readers know exactly how and where the can get local support.  The sticker is placed over the mailing label to hide the recipient's name and to feature the chapter or state orgainzation's contact information. I am told this has proven to be a very successful way to build awareness and attract newcomers to meetings. Here is a closer look at the label placed on the front cover:

Voice your issues on the Governor's Disability Survey

The Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities (the Committee) seeks your input on issues facing Texans with disabilities. Every two years, the Committee makes policy recommendations to the Governor and the Legislature on issues related to Texans with disabilities. Your input will help the Committee create policy recommendations that respond to the needs of the community.

The Committee wants to hear from Texans with disabilities, family members, caregivers, and professionals in the field of disability issues. If you would like to include outside data in your responses, please feel free to paste the data or link to the data in the open-ended response sections.

This survey is anonymous. It will be open from August 27, 2014 to September 10, 2014. Survey responses will then be reviewed and considered as the Committee creates its policy recommendations for the 84th Texas State Legislative Session, which will begin in January 2015.

We estimate that the survey will take about 5-10 minutes to complete. Thank you for participation in this important survey.

We encourage you to forward the survey in your communities who may be interested in taking the survey.  Thank you.

There are two general areas where one can submit a proposal to present: Educational Workshops and the State/Chapter Leader WorkshopsThe primary interest of those who attend the State and Chapter Leaders track is to learn how to improve their leadership and management skills or to learn about specific programs, relevant tools and success models that they can apply to improve their chapter or state’s delivery of HLAA’s education, support and advocacy mission. Some areas of interest where we would welcome applications include:

We invite any chapter or state leader with a helpful message to submit an application, following the direction on the instructions and application. We also encourage you to ask leaders who have given effective presentations at your chapter or in the community to consider sharing it at the convention. If you have any questions about the workshops, contact Ed Ogiba or Nancy Macklin.

Planning for the HLAA Convention 2015

1. Schedule of Events - A schedule of events will be posted on the Convention page soon, but get ready for a spectacular Convention at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel (a link to the hotel reservation system will be posted soon as well). The traditional Get Acquainted Party will be held on
Thursday evening, a banquet commemorating HLAA’s 35th anniversary and special group outing on Friday and Saturday evenings. Sunday’s Awards Breakfast and Ceremony is always a special event. If your chapter has done something special in one of the many categories where HLAA recognizes excellence in performance, be sure to submit a nomination early. Watch for the news on the chapter awards coming very soon.

All the workshops, parties and keynotes
will be under one roof.
2. Registration –Each chapter is entitled to one chapter delegate who is usually a leader or prospective leader (two for chapters that have co-presidents). Delegates along with Chapter and State Leaders receive the discounted rate of $125 until January 31; the rate is $150 between February 1 and March 31 – all delegate and leader registrations must be received by March 31; after March 31 the discount is no longer available. Note that the discounted registration offered to delegates and leaders does not include the banquet or off-site event. If you have not picked your chapter delegate as yet,  we encourage you to do so at the next meeting. No refunds will be made for those who register and are subsequently chosen to be a delegate – no exceptions. Online registration is not available for leaders and delegates – the form will be distributed in October.
3. Leader Workshops - The official dates for general attendance to the Convention program are Thursday, June 25 to Sunday, June 28. However, the Chapter Leaders and State Leaders Workshops start on Wednesday, June 24 with an afternoon all-leaders workshop (2 pm) and state leaders evening workshop. These workshops are the more comprehensive sessions for leaders.
