The Power of Words

We get questions about how to describe people who have hearing loss and what are the appropriate terms. Journalists have become sensitive to writing about people with disabilities; however, we still see confusion in mainstream publications and inaccuracies in how hearing loss is described.

HLAA Editor Barbara Kelley writes "Understanding the Terms -- Culturally and Audiologically" to explain the terms, how they’ve evolved, and how HLAA uses them.

We hope this helps newsletter editors and leaders. You have permission to reprint this article with credit to the source -- Hearing Loss Association of America
