Chapter News You Can Use January 18, 2009

IN THIS ISSUE:

Dear Leaders,

I have been using Constant Contact for the Chapter News You Can Use e-newsletter. There have been some problems associated using Constant Contact:
  1. Not everybody is on the list.
  2. We can reach more people with regular email.
  3. The news did not post to the leaders list.
  4. i was not able to archive the newsletter for you.

I will be using regular email from now on. I plan to go back and prepare archive versions of the previous issues in this format. There will be a link on the leadership support page when they are available. I will let you know when that is ready.

  • Online Tax Chat Planned

Because we do not have the names and contact information for your treasurers, please pass this
message to your treasurer as soon as possible.

All chapters with a Federal Tax ID number (see definition below*) will need to file some type of tax return. Some will need to complete the 990EZ or the 990 form. These forms have changed for the tax year 2008. The IRS has offered Online mini courses to explain the new forms. Here is the website regarding the new forms and mini online courses:

The online mini courses may be helpful but they may also be confusing. HLAA national is happy to provide some professional help specific to chapters and state offices.

Sean Smith, the HLAA national controller, will be online in the HLAA chat room to answer all your questions and concerns. Here are some questions he will be addressing:

1. Exactly who has to file a return
2. What form does my chapter use?
3. When does a chapter have to file?
4. What if the chapter is not prepared to file. Can we file an extension?

You will have other questions. Bring your questions to the chat room. If you are not able to access the chat room or not able to attend this event, you may submit your questions in advance using the “ask the expert form” online at: http://www.hearingloss.org/Community/askExpert.asp A transcript will be available and will be posted on the leadership support page. Mark your calendars now and I will also send a reminder the day before the chat.

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, and is used to identify a business entity. Generally, businesses need an EIN. You may apply for an EIN in various ways, and now you may apply online. This is a free service offered by the Internal Revenue Service. You must check with your state to make sure you need a state number and/or chapter.

**HLAA Chat Room

For those who are not familiar with the HLAA chat room:

* The chat room is not actual chatting. All communications are typed by those participating. Both the speaker and the guests will type their questions and answers.
* There are instructions on how to enter the guest chat room online near the log in area.
* You do not need to register for the chat room. You do need to log in and provide a name or
nickname.
* There are computer system requirements so I recommend that you try to access the chat room
before chat night to see if you are able to access the chat room. You may have to update your
browser or java software. Best to check now to see if you can access to allow for plenty of
time to make updates.
* If you are not able to attend the chat on Feb 3, 2009 you may submit your questions in advance
here: http://www.hearingloss.org/Community/askExpert.asp .
* There will be a transcript posted (usually within 24 hours) leadership support page.
